Announcing: The Stunning Power of Porch Appeal

Love at first sight

Your front porch is one of the first things people will see and will set the tone for what’s to come. Being that it’s the first impression, the design should be just as intentional as any other space inside. Lighting, paint, tiles, and décor are all design elements to think about when creating a space that represents your personality and style.

Transforming your front porch is like that final swipe of mascara or that cherry on top of the cake. Although a small part in the entire process, the home wouldn’t feel quite complete without it

When choosing how to create porch appeal, the first thing to consider is the style of your home. Is it mid-century or a modern farmhouse? Is it a traditional cottage? You want your design choices to make sense so it compliments your house and doesn’t look out of place. The next thing to consider is what type of vibe you want to create for your guests when they walk up to your home. Do you want it to feel dramatic and edgy? Do you want it to feel comfortable and soft?

You get the idea, so now let’s get into it! Here are six ways to change things up.

Change Your Lighting

Installing sconces can significantly improve the appearance and ambiance of your property. Outdoor lighting is a must to deter unwanted guests and ensure your safety. It is also a great opportunity to create a bold statement and improve the elegance of your entry.

Lighting comes in a variety of different finishes, forms, and price points. What you decide to install should be based on what mood you want to create. If you prefer bright lights for your porch, install up-lights. You can also install lantern wall sconces to bring an eclectic flair or wallchieres (the torchieres of the sconces) to show off the gilded side of your home’s personality. If you tend to lean more modern in your design style, check out these hard edge sconces on amazon. For the people who love a rustic flair, consider these gooseneck sconces as an option.

Update your house numbers

House numbers are obviously important to find an address but they are also a good opportunity to have some fun. Displaying your house numbers in planters on a wall or a custom metal plaque with your entire address are great examples of how to add some porch appeal. Painting your existing house numbers in vibrant colors and then placing them over a contrasted material like wood is also an easy and affordable way to add a unique design element.

Change the Color of Your Door

Paint is one of the easiest ways to change something up in design, and can often be the most effective. If your door has a dated wood finish, this may be the perfect opportunity to inject some color to your porch. For a dramatic look, think outside the box and play around with multiple paint samples.

Using paint with a higher gloss is also a great way to add some drama (and ultimately be easier to clean). If you want to keep things mellow, a fresh coat of a neutral color can still elevate your porch design and make things feel fresh. Look around your surroundings, both urban and natural, for some inspiration!

Utilize Plants and Planters

You can never go wrong using greenery at the front of your house. Although generally small, plants and planters can add a lot of personality and style to your space. Revamp your porch by investing in some solid planters or by stacking up a variety of different sizes. Adding multiple terracotta planters in your walkway or exterior stairs will also add visual impact. If you are looking to add color in a way other than paint, plants with colorful flowers are a great way to do this and are not as permanent if you want to switch things out.

These planters on amazon come in a set of three. Made from concrete and a neutral color, these planters would work in most design styles.

Play with your Door Mats Often

This may sound insignificant, but using the right door mats can transform your outdoor spaces without breaking the bank. Plaid or striped doormats are popular choices that are interesting but not too polarizing. Layering two  doormats that are different sizes and patterns can also be visually effective. If you’re more of a neutral person and scared to brighten things up on your porch with paint, consider choosing a doormat that has a fun pop of color.

For a sleek design but are most concerned with function, check out this doormat from target. Another option is this sustainable doormat from amazon. It has several options for length which is great for double entry size doors.

Add Pattern with Tile

This is probably my favorite way to add some personality to your front porch. Not only can it make the front of your house look polished and new, but it can add a lot of pattern and color as well.

Porcelain tile is a popular choice for outdoor spaces because of its strength, versatility, and ability to withstand multiple climates and foot traffic. This makes tiling a great option for both function and aesthetics. Whether you decide to tile your whole front porch or just the risers on the steps, your options for this are endless.
